Google no longer just ranks pages — it answers questions. And that changes almost everything about how SEO works in 2026.

AI Mode, the successor to Search Generative Experience, now handles a significant share of queries with synthesized answers directly on the results page. For many search intents, users get what they need without clicking a single link. If your SEO strategy is still built around ranking for informational keywords and waiting for traffic to flow, you’re likely already seeing the numbers drop.

What’s actually changed

The traditional SEO equation was straightforward: rank on page one, get clicks. That relationship has weakened considerably. AI Overviews intercept the user before they reach your content — particularly for how-to, definition, and general research queries.

This doesn’t mean SEO is irrelevant. It means the type of SEO that still drives business results looks different from what dominated strategy three years ago.

Which keyword types are most affected?

  • Informational queries — „how does X work,” „what is Y” — are now frequently resolved by AI without a click. Organic traffic from these terms is declining across most industries.
  • Commercial and comparison queries — „best project management tool for agencies,” „SEO agency in Vilnius” — still generate clicks. The user has intent to act, not just to learn.
  • Local search has remained more resilient. Google Maps results and local pack listings are largely unaffected by AI Overviews, making local SEO a higher-priority channel than it was two years ago.

How to adapt your strategy

Start by auditing your keyword portfolio by intent. Separate informational from commercial keywords and reassess what you’re expecting each type to deliver. Informational content still has value — but its job has shifted from driving direct traffic to establishing authority that gets your content cited inside AI answers.

Google’s AI systems do cite sources, and those citations drive meaningful referral traffic. The content that gets cited tends to be well-structured, specific, and demonstrably authoritative. Vague, generic articles get replaced by AI-generated summaries. Precise, expert content gets referenced.

Three things worth doing right now

  • Restructure content around clear questions and answers. FAQ sections, H2 headings framed as questions, and concise direct answers improve your chances of being included in AI Overviews as a cited source.
  • Strengthen E-E-A-T signals. Author credentials, cited data, links to primary sources — these are the signals Google’s AI relies on when deciding whose content to reference. This matters more now than keyword density ever did.
  • Measure clicks, not just rankings. A position-one result in 2026 may deliver 35–40% fewer clicks than the same position did in 2023, depending on the query type. Track actual traffic and business outcomes, not rank position alone.

The underlying shift

SEO in 2026 is less about outranking competitors and more about becoming a source the algorithm trusts enough to cite. That’s a meaningful difference in how you should approach content creation, site authority, and topical depth.

Businesses that recalibrate now — focusing on genuine expertise, clear structure, and commercial intent — will hold their visibility. Those still optimizing for the 2022 version of SEO are likely already losing ground, even if the rankings dashboard hasn’t caught up yet.
