If your organic traffic has quietly declined over the past six months, you’re not imagining it — and the cause is almost certainly AI-generated search results.
Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT Search, Perplexity, and Microsoft Copilot have fundamentally changed what happens between a user typing a query and a user clicking a link. In many cases, the click never happens. The answer appears directly in the search interface, synthesized from multiple sources — and your page, even if it ranked first, gets bypassed.
What’s actually changing in search?
The impact is uneven — and understanding that unevenness is the starting point for any serious SEO strategy in 2026.
Informational queries — „how does X work,” „what is Y,” „best ways to Z” — are most exposed to AI answer displacement. CTR data from the past several months consistently shows that AI Overview results suppress clicks to organic listings, particularly for question-based searches.
Commercial and transactional queries — „Google Ads agency Vilnius,” „custom AI integration for e-commerce,” „hire SEO consultant” — are considerably more protected. AI systems don’t typically replace a purchase decision with a generated paragraph.
What actually works right now
- Build content that AI cites, not content AI replaces. Original research, proprietary data, detailed case studies, expert commentary — this is the content AI systems reference as a source. Being cited in an AI answer is a new form of organic visibility. Thin, generic articles are simply absorbed and summarized away.
- Take structured data seriously. Schema markup — FAQ, HowTo, Organization, Article — helps AI systems parse and attribute your content correctly. This is no longer a technical afterthought. It directly affects whether your site appears in AI-generated responses.
- E-E-A-T signals matter more, not less. Google’s own guidance and the behavior of third-party AI platforms both favor content that demonstrates real experience and demonstrated expertise. Author credentials, original perspective, and consistent topical authority all contribute.
- Optimize for AI platforms, not just Google. Perplexity, ChatGPT, and Copilot all index the web. Domain authority, clean technical structure, and inbound links from credible sources influence which pages get surfaced in AI-generated answers — the same fundamentals, higher stakes.
- Rethink your success metrics. Pure organic traffic volume is an incomplete picture. Track branded search volume, direct traffic growth, assisted conversions, and — where possible — AI citation monitoring tools to understand how your content is being used.
SEO isn’t dead. The playbook is just different.
Businesses that built their organic presence on volume-based, keyword-stuffed content strategies are feeling the most pain right now. That approach made sense in 2020. In 2026, it’s a liability.
The businesses gaining ground are those that have invested in genuine topical authority — content that reflects real knowledge, real experience, and a clear point of view. That content gets cited. It gets linked to. It survives algorithm shifts because it was never relying on algorithm exploitation in the first place.
If your SEO strategy hasn’t been reviewed since 2024, or your organic performance has plateaued without a clear explanation, an audit is the right next step. The gap between sites that adapt and sites that don’t is widening — and it’s widening fast.
